The University of Technology Sydney (UTS), renowned for its technical course offering, was founded in 1988. With more than 35,000 students, 3,500 mployees, as well as academics, the campus consists of 10 buildings on its main site with additional facilities across Sydney.
Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise have helped us modernize our network infrastructure over the years, they have been a reliable partner on our growth journey. The guest experience for oncampus users was very critical for us, and operationally we have reduced the time taken for providing guest access from hours to minutes, and the best part is, we don’t have to go out and test it every time, because we know that its works!
Challenges
- Universities around the world are faced with the challenge of doing more with less. UTS’ rapidly expanding campus meant they needed to find a way to update their network, make features available throughout the campus, and manage costs.
- UTS were experiencing a number of network issues created by the different technologies in use by different faculties and groups. They needed to streamline the technology and build in seamless redundancy. They also needed to automate processes and make it easier to get things done. Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise delivered the plug and play, future-ready solution that UTS required.

Technical benefits
- Shortest Path Bridging (SPB) ensures that if there is a problem in one building it does not affect another building. ALE infrastructure enables a move towards more virtual networking. It provides a scalable architecture to support more than 90% of the day-to-day activities UTS need to run.
Financial benefits
- ALE provided the right port capacity at the right price. Similar products from other vendors were approximately 20% higher. As well the requirement to update equipment is less frequent, so lower cost and less frequent updates, even on a large campus, means cost savings.
